Tabla is considered one of the most expressive melodic percussion instruments known to man, offering a range of tonal qualities from subtle micro-tonal textures to pulsating walking bass lines. Learning drumming and percussion can provide numerous benefits, including increased creativity, stress relief, and greater vitality. Medical journals have also explored the effects of sound vibrations on people, finding that it can positively impact health by reducing stress and anxiety.
At the Art of Tabla class, students explore the instrument as a musical language, focusing on the study of mnemonic syllables and developing left/right brain independence, hand/finger touch sensitivity, and relaxation through melodic and rhythmic entrainment. The class emphasizes the power of the hands and fingers in creating musical magic, encouraging students to appreciate and harness their creative potential. In today’s modern world, where we often neglect the potential of our hands and fingers beyond typing on a keyboard or phone, learning the tabla can offer a unique and fulfilling creative outlet.
Art of Tabla is a music school dedicated to teaching and performing the Indian classical instrument, Tabla. At the heart of their teaching approach is an understanding of the core teachings of Shabd & Nāda Yoga. The school believes that anyone can learn to play Tabla because it is an intuitive and natural language. Art of Tabla focuses on the esoteric study of the fingers and hands to develop left/right brain independence, balancing points, and meditative rhythms. According to an article in the Indian Express, “tabla is an ideal instrument to develop one’s mind and body coordination. Playing the tabla involves complex finger movements that require a great deal of concentration and focus, thereby sharpening the mind and improving hand-eye coordination.” This emphasis on finger movements and coordination is a fundamental aspect of Art of Tabla’s approach. The school has also developed their own course, called ‘Contemporary Tabla of the Americas’, which covers various gharanas (schools) of Tabla, including Farrukhabad, Delhi, Ajrana, Lucknow, Banaras, and Punjab. The course includes instruction on the different styles, techniques, and repertoires of each gharana.
